An Anaheim Lunar New Year

January 14th, 2017

January 28th marks the Year of the Rooster, and Lunar New Year celebrations take place throughout Anaheim. Of course, Disneyland is a must with the beautiful lanterns and Chinese decorations covering Main Street U.S.A. You can also catch performances by traditional dancers, and snap photos of your beloved Disney characters in their own Chinese inspired costumes.

The San Gabriel Valley is a haven for authentic Chinese cuisine from all regions and is a great place to celebrate the Lunar New Year. From whole fish and rice cakes to your favorite mochi ice cream balls, check out a new restaurant or take a cooking lesson to learn how to whip up a delicacy at home (or your guest room!).

The Festivities Go On

The parties don’t stop with Christmas, Hanukkah and the western New Year. The tail end of January is also prime party season. The Los Angeles Saturday Dance Parade for the New Year is a big one, over 100 years old and featuring the famed lion dance. It’s a way to scare off bad spirits for the coming year, and you don’t want to miss it.

A midnight ceremony with firecrackers on January 28th at the temple in Chinatown is a major tradition, but if you missed it, you can visit the temple anytime during open hours. Light a lamp or candle, and enjoy some peace and quiet amidst your hectic travels.

Celebrate 2016 in Anaheim!

November 20th, 2015

Few are lucky enough to ring in 2016 in Anaheim, but if you are, you’ll get the chance to celebrate like a local! Many are heading to the Annual New Year’s at Noon party, which has family-friendly fun for revelers of all ages. There’s a ginger ale toast at noon, balloon drop and non-stop dancing. The event kicks off at 11am, and reservations are being accepted now. Held at the Children’s Museum on S. Euclid in La Habra, admission is under $10 for every age group.

Another option is Orange County’s biggest bash with scores of musical acts for every taste from Jim Morrison and Elton John tribute bands to local acts. There’s also a dueling piano performance to check out alongside comedy shows. A sprawling casino, carnival rides and loads of food trucks are on site at the OC Fair & Event Center in Costa Mesa. Tickets start at $44.

Family Fun for All!

At Great Park’s Family New Year’s Eve you can celebrate early with the kids in a safe, fun place that closes at 10pm—so you can still make an adults-only gala afterward. Enjoy dancing, carousel rides, kid-friendly activities and live music in a no-alcohol environment. Located at the Orange County Great Park in Irvine, admission is free and parking is $10.

If you want a more traditional NYE, check out the annual New Year’s Eve Bash at the Wayfarer Bar on W 19th Street in Costa Mesa. This 21+ show has a $20 cover at the door, drink specials, and of course, that champagne toast at midnight.
